Stating that he has returned the watch and chain to her friend (Lafcadio Hearn), hoping that Hearn will write her a letter of thanks. Hoping that neither Watkin nor Freeman "have occasion to regret we became acquainted," and referencing her "exhibition of feeling," noting that the folly is not all on his side. Assuring her that all her papers, letters and confidences will remain sacred "unless you become the aggressor," noting that in that case he will "turn the fight over to the parties most interested, Dr. Freeman & Mr. Hearn."
